How and why I created the No Bogey Perfect Practice Putting Cup™
One day, over 10 years ago, I went to our local golf shop here in San Diego to buy a practice putting cup to improve my putting. Like most people, I am very busy and wanted something I could putt into at home, at night, or on a quick break at my office. After reviewing, buying, and using different putting cups, I noticed they did not really help my putting that much. In fact, it became obvious to me that there were major design flaws.
The Flaws:
The horseshoe-shaped cup. One type I bought was a horseshoe cup. It had an opening at one end and an elevated back at the other. There were two major challenges to this cup.
- If I hit the ball past the cup, I did not have any way to put back into it. I would either have to move the ball or the cup to finish my putt.
- I could hit the ball at almost any speed and it would stay in the cup, even a ball that would have no chance of staying in a regulation cup.
In frustration, I went back and asked for something different, something round. The second cup they gave me looked like a bear trap. It was made out of steel and had flanges that would flip up and keep the ball in the center. Like the first putting cup, I felt there were major design flaws.
- I could hit the ball very hard and it would stay in the cup. It did not help my ball speed.
- The ball would often deflect off the steel.
- Visually, I had a hard time imagining the steel was a real golf hole.
Again, I went back to the golf store, by now I think they were getting tired of seeing me. I asked if there were catalogues I could go through to see what else was available. I asked the clerk if they had a simple, round putting cup, made out of a pliable vinyl or rubber that I could simply put on my floor and putt into. After searching through many catalogues, talking to many stores and finally doing a patent search, I found out the answer was No!
The rest is history. Ten years later, and over 100,000 cups sold in the United States alone, the No Bogey Perfect Practice Putting Cup™ is still the best putting cup in the world.
So revolutionary, it was awarded its own Patent by the United States Patent & Trademark office. (Patent #5487545) In order to be awarded a Utility Patent the No Bogey Perfect Practice Putting Cup had to meet two important criteria.
